Over 60s Holiday Club

60+ Holiday Club marks return

Sandylands Methodist Church in Kendal, Cumbria, stepped out once again with another ‘first’ – a holiday club for the over 60s  last year. This year it return this Friday October 21st

Community worker Jonny Gios explains: “Often the church places so much energy and concentration on children and young people, we forget older peope in our communities. Sandylands is committed to engaging and reaching out to all its community – meaning all ages and all backgrounds.”

The Holiday Club had a variety of different activities during the day including table tennis, card making, flower arranging, dominoes, gentle exercise, and an intro to computing.

One of those who attended the day last year said: “Thank you so much for a wonderful taster for your activities and introduction to your church. Everybody was so welcoming and helpful. Lunch was a super treat and we have both enjoyed our time here. I think you have done a wonderful job. A lovely day.”

Organiser Mrs Jenny Goodman said “While I was hosting the card-making session, it was lovely to hear frequent peals of laughter from the group who were enjoying table games. Great! Those who made things to take home seemed really chuffed with their achievements.

There are many older people in communities who are isolated, lonely, infirm or simply don’t have anything to be involved in. Although this was the first ‘over 60s’ holiday club, the church does run a weekly club for those over 60 which includes board games and refreshments.

Jonny Gios spoke about last year : “It was fantastic to see so many new faces we haven’t seen before. It goes to show that there are many more people we can be reaching, as we strive to share God’s love in Sandylands.”

This year we have more activities and will no doubt have generated more interest from our flood recovery work in the community. This year will will be helped out by many church members from our church and Age UK South Lakeland

“We want not only to fill a need within our community but also to bless our community,” said Jonny. “You can keep up with the work of Sandylands Methodist Church on our Facebook page.”
